Nehalem Bay State Park Campground
Nehalem, Oregon
The further we get into our RV adventures, the less we’re willing to spend time at campgrounds. But there are a few that we can’t miss, and Nehalem Bay is at the top of the list. This campground is ideally sited just behind a large dune from the stunning Oregon coast, and campers take full advantage of it. The beach feels like what I would imagine a late ’60s or early ’70s California beach would be … people drinking, people smoking, dogs running freely as dogs should (with owners behaving responsibly), and even the occasional horse and rider trotting past. Even with such a vast and interesting area to explore, nary a sunset passes that we aren’t at the beach. In addition, the variety of paved and dirt trails give you no excuse for not putting in a few miles. The campground itself is incredibly well planned, making movement a breeze. A few overhanging limbs could be trimmed, but that’s about it for complaints. They even have a huge recycling area, which allowed us to escape the bags of recycling we’d been carrying for the past few weeks. Make sure to spend an afternoon exploring the quaint shops and restaurants of nearby Manzanita. Also, the Tillamook Cheese Factory is less than 40 minutes away if you’re craving a fresh grilled cheese or an ice cream cone.
